I have a similar problem with xdm.  After a while (usually a few
minutes) xterm seems to hang (not seeing any key events?) but the
mouse usually works fine still (I can still get the xterm menus and
window manager root menu).  Actually, come to think of it, it's not
just the xterms which stop responding to keys since I can't abort
the server with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE either.

This problem only arises when I use xdm.
