Try ftp.bsdi.com; I think they may be running a gopher too, but I'm not sure.
I'd also recommend the pc-unix/software and /hardware faqs at rtfm.mit.edu 
in pub/usenet/news.answers for very complete reviews of PC unix. For some 
reason 386bsd (and variants) is not covered, but Linux is.
