A: They are both freely distributable UNIX BSD deriviatives. They both run on 386s or better, but there is interest in porting both of these to other architechures. Xwindows is also available for both. Q: What is the difference between 386bsd and NetBSD? A: In a nutshell, 386bsd 0.1 is the work of Bill & Lynne Jolitz and is intended for research and experimentation. There is also an add-on called the "patchkit" which is *highly* recommended becasue it makes 386bsd *much* more stable. NetBSD 0.8 is a spin-off of 386bsd which is headed by Chris Demetriou. It's main goals are stability and usability. So far, NetBSD and 386bsd are almost totally compatible. Q: Where can i get information about both of these fine products? A: 386bsd has a FAQ list which is available by ftp from hrd769.brooks.af.mil under the directory /pub/FAQ. It is recommended reading for both 386bsd and NetBSD. NetBSD has no FAQ as of yet; for more information you should read the install notes, wich are available from agate.berkely.edu as /pub/NetBSD/NettBSD-0.8/INSTALL_NOTES. You can also get this document from gatekeeper.dec.com as /pub/BSD/NetBSD/NetBSD-0.8/INSTALL_NOTES.
