He's wrong.

Of course, if you had asked in comp.os.linux, his statement would have
been correct.  If you had asked about FTPing NetBSD from
sun-lamp.os.berkeley.edu or 386bsd from agate.berkeley.edu, then you
would have also been correct.  In fact, I doubt that anyone in this
group will be able to tell you to FTP to tsx-11.mit.edu for a copy of
Linux.
