Do you _really_ never want to re-build your kernel ???!?
I'll assume that you know very little about U**X at all, and tell you
the following:

In /sys/i386/conf there are several example config files. In these files
you configure your kernels devices. The default kernel probably has most
of what you need, but it's nice to be able to add/subtract things depending
on your hardware/preferences.

By /src files, I assume you mean /usr/src. They're not _necessary_, but
I've found that the patch-kits only seem to change sources - and don't
release new binaries. If you want to upgrade your system with a patch-kit,
you need /usr/src (a virgin copy to start with).

Forgive me if I've just repeated stuff that you already know.
