It may be a little bit too late for this advice, but you should have collected typical excerpts from the hate-mail (sine ira et studio) including the name of the senders. From time to time you could have posted this collection in a suitable newsgroup where you are known (this one or comp.windows.x.i386unix). So the people who wrote hate-mail would have been exposed for their ignorant "rightfully smiting the heathen and thus saving the world".
