Ok, I'm reading this, and I've already figured out about the sio? device.
Sorry for wasting everyones time.  Works like a dream.... except....

comcontrol now gives me 'inappropriate ioctl' messages.  I havn't looked
into it yet, but I'm running

concontrol /dev/com00 bidir
concontrol /dev/com01 bidir

in /etc/rc.local with configured and working sio[01] devices, and
'mkdev com0[01] c 28 [01]' /dev entries.

Any suggestions ?
