You won't get luck with that thing. Doesn't use bus-master DMA, a half-hearted solution with respect to multiprocessing systems. I've got experience with a 1542B and a 1540A (the *40 are w/o floppy ctrlr). Both work fine, the 1542C has h/w problems since it's able to run SCSI/2 and thus has much tighter timing conditions, that *might* cause trouble with bad cables. (Flat cables as used inside the boxes are always okay.)
