The question is: is either of them in a position to >maintain a coherent core for future development? First, I am not trying to be biased one way or the other. I think we all agree we NEED organization. Look at the first couple of months of 386bsd. MANY, MANY people helped, but we have a consistency problem. We are all waiting for the 0.1 release to sync are files. The major difference in the proposals is: HOW DO WE PAY FOR THE ORGANIZATION. To keep themselves in business, BSDI cannot give things away, they will have to charge for support and they will have to charge for innovations. Coordination from an independent organization will also need a base of financial support. The fundamental question we must all ask ourselves: Is BSDI the same as the CSRG, but directly funding the work from its users, and will I give OUR fixes and new development to a for profit organization?
