Someone suggested that the problem might be with the cable itself.
Anyhow, you might try replacing /sys/i386/isa/lpa.c with lpt.c from the
interruptless-lpt kit (rename it to lpa.c).  If you try this (I haven't
tried it myself, so caveat utilitor), the minor device number for lpa0
should be changed to, e.g.,  48.
