I had exactly this problem with NetBSD.  Except that the blocks were solid
blue instead of white.  It had me tearing my hair out I'm telling you, cos
the only way to fix the problem was to power cycle the damn machine.  I
finally figured out it was the fact that I had accidently put a statement
in my login files to set the TERM to vt100 for when I logged in remotely
(I know there's better ways) with a test to see I the tty is /dev/vga.  I
messed up the test somehow and it was getting set when on the console.  It
would seem that the vt100 reset sequence was somehow responsible for the
messed up video cos the problem went away when I took out the TERM stuff.
