I just noticed that I did not say what the differences were:

janis:ram {1} dmesg
dmesg: magic number incorrect
janis:ram {2} swapinfo
Floating exception
janis:ram {3} 

Also when the new kernel boots it does not print a line about the second
ide drive. Something like wd0 at slave 0 = <CONNOR ...>. The original kernel
prints a line for both ide drives.

BTW, I built teh new kernel with 

config JANIS
cd /sys/compile/JANIS
make depend
make clean
make

Hope that's correct.
