Regarding the problem with nroff swapping itself to death:

When you run into this problem, ^C out of the make, cd to the
directory where the source file is, cd into the "obj" directory, then
run the command that make tried to run. It'll still take a while, but
it should complete. At least, it did on my poor little 4 mb machine
with default swap.

Then go back to where you were and restart make.

I especially had that problem with csh.1, but it did finish...
