I'm having problems with this myself. I don't have a courier modem but tried
it with an external 2400 baud modem. I think the problems I was having were
due to the fact that I was using a 25 pin to 9 pin modem cable. I used to use
the modem on my bbs with a 25 pin to 25 pin modem cable that gave me no
problems. I think the 9 pin cable wasn't supplying some needed signals or
something.

Well now I have a 14.4k internal modem that I haven't gotten to work yet. I
still haven't gotten it configured quite right for the comm port and irq
setting. I have an ide card that has two comm ports on it and since I bought
it a long time ago I lost the handy dandy guide two page guide that explained
the jumpers on it. Now it's down to trial and error to at least disable one
of the ports so my internal modem will work.
