Seems a shame to get a VLB hi speed bus, and then stuff a cheap piece of
crap like a 4000 in. Look at an S3 or something. On the other hand,
if you're not using X, then don't bother getting the VLB, and save a
few bucks.

make sure these are fast enough. Shouldn't be much of a problem with a 33/66,
but double check.

Everything you listed should probably be OK. I recall reading about problems
with various chipsets(SIS springs to mind), but all in all, most 'of 'em work.

No. not if you know what you're doing.

Yes.

Yes. If you want more than 16MB's of memory, you have no choice. The
1542 doesn't do the right thing under 386bsd if you have more than
16MB's of memory, and you'll have lots of problems.

I had a DEC EISA 486/DX50, with 1740's, and it hauled butt.

Depends on $$$'s. If $$$'s aren't much of an issue, I can personally
guarantee that 386bsd up through the patchkit and FreeBSD run beautifully
on just about every DEC PC made. (I know, I have most of them).
