Seems a shame to get a VLB hi speed bus, and then stuff a cheap piece of crap like a 4000 in. Look at an S3 or something. On the other hand, if you're not using X, then don't bother getting the VLB, and save a few bucks. >Adaptec 1542B SCSI adapter card >16MB RAM >128k cache make sure these are fast enough. Shouldn't be much of a problem with a 33/66, but double check. >1.2 GB SCSI drive >SMC Elite16 network card Everything you listed should probably be OK. I recall reading about problems with various chipsets(SIS springs to mind), but all in all, most 'of 'em work. >Are these components supported by 386BSD ? >Also: >1> Am i going to experience any problems if i install two hard drives? No. not if you know what you're doing. > >2> Are the above cards supported? Yes. > >3> is it worthwhile getting an EISA system? Yes. If you want more than 16MB's of memory, you have no choice. The 1542 doesn't do the right thing under 386bsd if you have more than 16MB's of memory, and you'll have lots of problems. I had a DEC EISA 486/DX50, with 1740's, and it hauled butt. > >4> Any other recommendations??? Please feel free to suggest any other > brand names Depends on $$$'s. If $$$'s aren't much of an issue, I can personally guarantee that 386bsd up through the patchkit and FreeBSD run beautifully on just about every DEC PC made. (I know, I have most of them). -- Jaye Mathisen, COE Systems Manager (406) 994-4780 410 Roberts Hall,Dept. of Computer Science Montana State University,Bozeman MT 59717 osyjm@cs.montana.edu
