   to configure the Makefile to reflect my current set-up (NetBSD 0.8),
   but the compile kept failing due to missing XFree files.  I
   commented out all of the lines having to do with Xdvi, but no luck.

METAFONT also tries to import some X stuff, so it can (optionally)
display characters as it draws them.
