Finally figured out the X_CC_X problem with the smail build
(I'm using bash but I gather that the problem occurs with ash also) -
put
CASE_NO_NEWLINES=true
in conf/EDITME 

(or in a new conf/os entry for 386bsd) 

If you use the os/bsd4.3 entry as a base, you need to remove -ldbm.
