They work. Here is what I done. I recompiled XS3 with the shared memory buffer extensions and recompiled the kernel with the option SYSVSHM. I got hold of mpeg_play and recompiled to use shm calls. The mpeg_play is now able to display mpeg files using shm calls. The kernel is a bit unstable so there is more hacking to be done. It crashed a couple of times while I was trying to do a compile and I was not running X. About iopl -- I posted long, long time ago patches to fix a scheduling problem with 0.0 which manipulated iopl, in my case restored properly the iopl as well as patches for the kernel to set the io bitmaps. I can't find any of my patches but I am going to keep looking.
