Me too...me too... I've had this happen many times.  (I don't get the
automatic bad sector remapping question thoough.).  

I don't know what to do.  There was someone a while back who said that he's
working on it.  

I'd really like to know why this is happening.  I have a 120Meg ST1144A IDE
drive.  The worst part about it is that i get one of these beasty errors in my
swap partition!  Grrrrr....
