Basically, my network consists of two 386's, one running DOS, the other running 386bsd. Both have identical configurations otherwise. I'm using two clone NE2000 cards, with one segment of thin ethernet. Now, using NCSA's FTPBIN.EXE on DOS, I can ftp to the 386bsd PC, and the data transfer rates never get much above 21.5 k/second. This is with both 'put' and 'get'. Conversely, using NCSA's TELBIN.EXE on DOS (which has a built in ftp server) I can ftp from the 386bsd PC to the DOS PC, and the data transfer rates make it up as far as 65 k/second. Another test situation was when I used the same LAN card in another 386bsd system (a 486dx) with the same coax etc, ftp was still limited between the two 386bsd systems at about 60 k/second. Now I finally discovered that something was wrong when I took my 386bsd system to a friend's house and hooked up to his lan (which consists of a MicroVax II running Ultrix and an Encore MultiMax (310?) running Umax (a BSD derivative). Using ftp from my 386bsd system to the MultiMax, I got transfer rates over and above 400 k/second. Now why can't I get the same on my local ethernet here at home?! It can't be that the 386 won't handle high transfer rates, because it did nicely from the MultiMax. Is it due to the packet driver on the DOS PC slowing things down? If that's the cause, then why between two 386bsd systems is the transfer rate equally as slow? I gather that the NCSA software could be responsible for some of the lack of speed, but if one 386bsd system can get 400+ k/second to a MultiMax, why can't it get the same to another 386bsd system?
