Note that the diskcontroller could make a BIG difference. I had a RZ58 (1.3Gb) on 
an Adaptec 1540 versus a 1740. That makes up for something like a factor 1.5 with
block reads. (Note: this was observed on a non-386bsd system, but you get the idea).
