I have a Trident 8900CL, and am perfectly happy with it. It does the job
with little or no frills, and has the advantage that its CHEAP (~$55 w/ 1 Meg).
If you decide to upgrade to better card later, to get better X performance
say, you've not lost much cash.

With X, the major slow bit is scolling within xterm. I have a DX2-66, and its
still slow. Thing is, I reckon if you want decent X graphics, you're gonna
want a nice big screen, so you're looking at spending over $1000 on monitor
alone. An alternative route is to buy an old Sun 3, and put X kernel on it.
They can be had for about a grand or so, and are generally pretty robust.
And that way, a lot of the graphics dog-work is done on a different machine.

Why bother trying?
