Works like a champ under FreeBSD, has for a LONG time.  As a matter of
fact, my upgrade tools use a dumped perl script to convert the passwd
file to the new crypt function or DES crypt from the old plain-text
crypt.

(though perl also fail the db tests, for reasons explained in a followup
article)
