Well, being struck by the same problem as Tom (having an st506 drive that claims to be IDE but isn't), I tried installing FreeBSD 1.0 on it, expecting the answer "No". But, to my delight, (I installed the disc as an st506 with no automatic bad sector forwarding, 1024 cylinders rather than the real 1754), after producing (correctly) a disklabel with the "sf" flag, FreeBSD then proceeded to do a media analysis of the disc to initialise the bad144 table. So my wife would like to thank all the FreeBSD crew, wherever you are, for making life livable again. And I'd like to add my thanks, publicly, too. Alistair -- Alistair G.
