It was rather bulky (needed a 200+ MB disk for the source distribution), and ran sluggishlz on my AMD386-33 with IDE disk/5 MB RAM. To make it run almost stable, a few dozens of semi-official patches had to be applied (by a friend with a bigger disk :(, couldn't recompile with small disks, see above). From what I tried, compiling of applications worked most of the time. compatibility was definitely no issue. Funktionality, however, was... compiles/installs failed because of non-working tools! I was rather disappointed, I had liked the concept of porting a mature OS like bsd to the easily available pcs, but bsd/386 just couldn't cut it... after 2 months of waiting for the Jolitz' new release I tried Linux, I think 0.96.6. It ran well with my 386, but I ran into trouble installing software... not being a C rsp. *ix guru , I tried to get along. I tried another SLS release, and things got better, and with support fron the net, I got a stable system. The situation now: I'm happy running Linux 0.99pl9, now on a 486 with 16 MB RAM and half a gig of disk space. UUCP and X11 are all right, and X with open look is as nice as and faster than on a mid-size SPARC. In the end, Linux is, what I expected from bsd... The ongoing development of NetBSD/FreeBSD got my attention again, but right now, I will stay with Linux.
