I have compiled tcsh (6.04 if i remember right) using its config file for BSD4.4. It works for me allright. Emacs sucks more, because ( of the changes in a.out i think ) it cannot dump itself. Tinker with unexec.c! I have succeeded to make it produce xemacs with at least a valid exec header, but it doesen't work. I didn't have time to study the new a.out format, maybe someone! Isn't it possible to have emacs not to dump itself, but to compile the lisp files every time? (slow like hell.) BTW i mean emacs 18.58, i don't have spare MB's for later monsters. :-( .
