(I don't know anything about NetBSD, but I'm a Sun Sysadm)
What exactly happens when you try to resolve local names?  Do you have
your machine "pointed" at a suitable local nameserver via /etc/resolv.conf?
Do you have local hosts file (/etc/hosts)?
