Has anybody else run into trouble using the XFree86
package on freebsd.cdrom.com?

Tar dumped core repeatedly unpacking the distribution,
then mysteriously ran without a hitch when the commands
were run on the console. When the x386install routine was
called an error flashed on the screen and promptly vanished
in a blizzard of output, evidently comprised of filenames.
The error appeared to have some relation to either missing
device files or a missing (or misnamed) MAKEDEV script,
but it didn't live long enough for serious study.

If anybody can offer a workaround please do so!

thanks for reading
