Funny, XFree86 (X11R5) works just fine on my machine running NetBSD.
As others have said, I don't think your contacts really know what
they're talking about.

I've had no problems with network stability, or with general system
stability.  INN compiles and runs with only a few glitches, mostly in
the shell scripts, but bash 1.13 should fix those problems.  Most
other net software compiles and runs easily.  The only real sticking
point is the fact that the shell isn't exactly bug-for-bug compatible
with the AT&T Bourne shell, so some scripts need tweaking.
