I tip to my server, start SLIP, quit (OR suspend) tip, slattach /dev/com0, ifconfig sl0 inet client server, route add default server, and I'm all set. Right? Well, not exactly. I am able to ping things, telnet and ftp. However, first large chunk of text on screen hangs the connection completely. One out of about ten times it happened as early as login screen, more often it happens within the first five or so ls/dir commands. When the connection hangs packets obviously stop flowing, ping doesn't work anymore. After the hang, last process that keeps the /dev/com0 open (usually slattach, but if I don't exit from tip it's tip) can't be killed: ps reports that it is idle (STAT I), and after kill -whatever it is idle and trying to exit (STAT IE). This doesn't change if I ifconfig sl0 down or ifconfig sl0 delete before or after the kill. So, when I shutdown -h now to get rid of the maverick process, shutdown just hangs after printing the broadcast message, before killing any other process. After reboot I have a bloody hell on my disk, nothing gets cleaned up before dying. All this doesn't change with line speed, I tried speeds from 2400bps to 38400bps. Exactly one time I did get silo overflow, but don't remember when. If I tip to a hung com0 I get "write: operation not supported by device" as a response to every typed character. Any suggestions? Equipment: 486DX33; 8Mb RAM; combo card full of attributes, I think it's 16550, if it may be important I'll open the box to check, it has two serial lines, printer + game + IDE + floppy; US Robotics 14400 sportster; mouse is on the other serial line, X doesn't change the behaviour. Thanks, Dejan
