I was, I am not now.

I switched to a regular EGA card that one of the folks here had in his
garage (actually, it was in the pile of stuff to throw away) and it
worked just fine.

Of course, the installation wiped out the DOS partition, but that is to
be expected :-).

Feel free to consider this little problem closed.  Thanks very much for
all of the help.
