I haven't seen any problems in almost 24 hours, except for a spontanious reboot, which may have been caused by me accidentally stomping on the ground near my computer (perhaps a loose reset switch or something). I remember hearing that the 1742 driver would put the board into enhanced- mode by itself, but that may be just wishful thinking. I really don't know which DMA chipset I'm using. It just really frustrating to get so far in the installation (once to actually unpacking the sources), and then die of strange errors. Thanks everybody for the help.
