Sounds exactly like the bug which infested my X setup (386bsd, patch 0.2.4, XFree86 1.3 plus drawing and ATI bug fixes) until this afternoon. I'm new at this, so I asked a local Xpert, who suggested I might have a battle between xdm and getty for my console.
