Hello all,

What's the trick to making emacs 19 and tin 1.2.2 get along?

I'm using the emacs binary from freebsd.cdrom.com, and tin
compiled "straight out of the box" on FreeBSD 1.0-Gamma.

When tin calls up emacs to compose a letter or post, it appears
that emacs is unable to get control of the terminal. There is a
status message that seems to indicate emacs is waiting for I/O,
but can't get to the foreground. Vi works fine, and DISPLAY
is most certainly unset (I've checked 8-))

The entire problem goes away if the session is run under X; emacs
opens a new window and all's fine.

On a possibly related note, every so often (~1 in 5 logins) the
login greeting is followed by a message saying something about
"No access to tty, thus no job control in this shell (inappropriate
ioctl for device)". Simply logging out and back in appears to clear
the problem, in that the message has never repeated twice.

Can anybody tell me what's wrong (or where to start looking)?

thanks

bob
