Yes, the new install disks make it much easier to install a custom FreeBSD 
system into it's own partition.

Why bother?  All you need to do is stick the kernel on the FreeBSD root file-system
and change the active partition.  If you don't like messing around with the
active partition, there are many boot managers that let you select a partition
to boot from every time you reboot.
