I also had the drive working fine under DOS, and when I booted from the FreeBSD distribution floppy the drive was recognized properly. What I didn't know was that my drive supported some kind of universal drive parameter (geometry) translation. I called MAXTOR directly to find out what the correct drive settings were, just to check. My drive was set originally at: 845 cylinders, 8 heads, 61 sector/track. DOS, and the drive itself, used these parameters just fine. FreeBSD read the geometry (settings) directly from the drive instead of looking in the BIOS for the settings. The settings FreeBSD wanted, and which were recommended by MAXTOR coincidently, were: 683 cylinders, 16 heads, and 38 sectors/track. Yes, I had to backup my DOS stuff and re-format the drive (I had to keep a DOS partition around), but FreeBSD worked fine after that. It could be that you are having a similar problem. Just a thought. -- Timothy Loveridge tlov@park.uvsc.edu UVSC Computer Services loveriti@uvsc.edu loveriti@cc.uvsc.edu
