Perspiring minds want to know! *---- The 1542 is a bus-mastering disk controller. The 1522 uses programmed I/O and/or DMA. I think you've exaggerated the price difference. The 1542B is available OEM (just the controller, no drivers, cables, etc.) for about $ 165.
