Perspiring minds want to know! The 1542 is a bus-mastering controller. This 1522 is not. That makes the 1542 much faster (at least in a protected-mode OS like Linux, with properly written drivers). Given this difference, my inclination is that modifying the 1542 driver to work with the 1522 *could* be significant work.
