Maybe, the differences you described are due to the fact the wd driver has detected a DOS partition table (unlike w/ your ST-157). Thus it would like to write a 386BSD sub-partition. You should either add a `d' partition line (pd and od identical to `a' partition, other fields omitted), or you invalidate the boot sector by storing zero's over it.
