In fact, the `d' partition is missing. `d' is always considered to be
the partition containing the whole disk.

Maybe, the differences you described are due to the fact the wd driver
has detected a DOS partition table (unlike w/ your ST-157). Thus it would
like to write a 386BSD sub-partition. You should either add a `d'
partition line (pd and od identical to `a' partition, other fields
omitted), or you invalidate the boot sector by storing zero's over
it. (dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rwd1d bs=512 count=1)

WARNING: all this presumes you wanna give up your DOS partition table!
