To jump into the Kernel debugger (which you have previously
compiled into the Kernel with the option DDB in the config-file)
press Ctrl-Alt-Esc.

You might want to try getting a NetBSD-current kernel, and
starting from there. I also remember a number of things you
can mess with in /sys/arch/i386/isa/wd.c, so have a look at it
and enjoy.
