The end result was that only one 24 Meg partition was left visible in fdisk. Before installing, The DOS partition was 100 Meg and a UNIX (386BSD) partition of 900 Meg was created and looked OK in fdisk. I entered the starting sector for NetBSD as 204288, since originally, for Netbsd 0.8, disklabel said the starting cylinder was 256, with 798 sect/cyl. This looks about right for a 100 Meg DOS partition. At this point, after low-level formatting and re-partitioning the disk the same way as before, I have no way of verifying the starting sector of the BSD partition. fdisk doesn't tell that. I did not have any such problem with NetBSD-0.8 Questions: Why is the DOS partition being overwritten and how do I fix it? How do I confirm the starting sector of BSD? Is there a public-domain tool available that will let me re-create the netBSD partition without using the Tiny 386BSD boot disk? The Install notes don't say. What is the difference between KC-aha-09p1.fs and KC-aha-09.fs?
