I have just installed NetBSD-0.9 on my PC and have run into
some problems. I had 386BSD running on this system
successfully for quit a while. I ran X11 with a mouse on one
COM port, and often ran kermit through a modem on the other
COM port.

Now for my questions. Any help would be appreciated.

(1) What is wrong with /dev/tty?

The device /dev/tty seems to be inaccessible to any but the
superuser, so kermit fails straight off (since it opens
/dev/tty). Indeed

 echo junk > /dev/tty

fails for all but the superuser. Changing permissions and
owner of the `device' /dev/tty does not affect the outcome.

(2) What is wrong with the COM ports /dev/com0 and /dev/com1?

Running kermit (as superuser to avoid problem 1) can access
the modem and sometimes dial-out, but nothing is echoed to
the screen (not even an OK in response to the AT command).
Very quickly kermit hangs so completely that ^C and ^Z are
not effective, and a system reset and reboot is necessary.

X11 hangs immediately, so to check on the mouse (being
suspicious of COM ports by now), I tried

  cat -v /dev/com0

which on 386BSD prints strings of characters whenever the
mouse is moved. Nothing is printed under NetBSD-0.9.

I am aware of the fact that COM1 is /dev/com0 and COM2 is
/dev/com1, so no confusion there has lead to these problems.
Also I get the same results if I try the above on the devices
/dev/tty0? (to which the /dev/com? are linked).
