Well, sure.  You can get stock X11R5 (big distribution) and then patch it
yourself using the XFree86 patches.

I'm not sure what you consider big, but I consider stock X11R5 a BIG
distribution.  You can do whatever you want, but I don't believe you'll
get R5 to work on BSD w/out the XFree86 patches, and why download all
of the patches when you can get the binary distribution at the same
site.

You don't have to get the complete X distribution from freebsd.cdrom.com.

You can get the binary distribution, or the source distribution, or whatever
distribution you want/need. :-)
