I have successfully installed smail 3.1.28 on my NetBSD 0.9 system.
I get incoming mail via uucp and redistribute it via TCP.

If anyone is interested in the os dependent config file, I could post
it here. Also there is bug in the shell (I think) , which prevents
mkdefs from working correctly - I also have a little patch for that
script, which I also could post.
