The hardware works flawlessly under MSDOS, and worked pretty well under System V release 3.2 (Interactive's port). This drive doesn't work properly under 386BSD. I can read tapes from other systems OK (but with extremely poor streaming), but cannot write tapes reliably (if at all) from 386BSD. The controller has RAM, jumpers, and a mysterious set of DIP switches which I have no documentation for. I suspect that the controller RAM may be too small, the switches set wrong, or both, for use with 386BSD. My tape controller is an Everex Systems EV-831 revision F with D.05A firmware, and what looks like a 2K RAM (2016-family) chip (the socket looks like it could hold a larger (4K?) static RAM chip). If anyone out there has the docs for this controller board that they could FAX to me, please drop me some e-mail as soon as possible. I am looking to upgrade to FreeBSD soon, and I'm trying to determine whether I need to take my tape drive to work so I can write a distribution tape under MSDOS, or if I can use our RS6000 to write a 60MB tar tape. Thanks much for any help! -- Gil Kloepfer, UNIX System Administrator Work: gil@nynexdpi.com NYNEX DPI Company Home: gil@limbic.ssdl.com Sugar Land, TX Phone: (713) 274-9365
