This sounds like "Keyboard error -- Hit F1 to continue". I found the problem (and my ability to run X) went away when I took the console driver code from NetBSD 0.9 and used it instead. Since then, I'm running my own console code, so I can't tell you if it's improved with gamma or epsilon.
