Isn't the "works with caching off" behaviour related to the "non-cacheable" bit not being set in the pages being DMA'ed to for Bus Mastering DMA only? If so, I'd be more for pointing the finger at SCSI, since the BINVD still leaves a window that setting the non-cacheable bit would close.
