HELP Date: 21 Oct 1993 21:31:39 GMT Organization: University of Mississippi, Dept. of Computer Science Lines: 44 Distribution: world Message-ID: <2a6v3r$boc@Tut.MsState.Edu> NNTP-Posting-Host: cy.cs.olemiss.edu [this is being sent to FreeBSD-questions, as well as comp.os.386bsd.questions ] machine info: 486DX2-66 running FreeBSD First of all, I made a major mistake, and i know it -- so please hold the "how dumb can you be" posts, please :) I was trying to get xdm up and running on the machine, (originally someone else had got X working). I discovered that xdm wasn't working cause libcrypt.a was not present (or atleast thats what i think it was -- isn't libcrypt.a reqd. to run xdm-des?). Anyway, so i got the stuff from the securedist directory on freebsd.cdrom.com over and installed it. Then, like a complete ass, i went and rebooted without removing the root passwd. So, when i booted up, i couldn't log in. I rebooted in single user mode, and deleted the root passwd, as well as those of the other accts. on there (just two others). However, when i rebooted, i still couldn't log in! (Note: all this was without xdm running -- i'll tackle that later) So, currently, i have all the securedist stuff installed, no passwds in the master.passwd and in passwd (i went and removed the * in the passwd field in the passwd file, as a desperate measure), and i can't login at all. Obvious conclusion : i'm doing something wrong! :( Question is what can i do to re-enable logins? (besides re-installing FreeBSD?) HEEELLPPPPP! viren viren@cy.cs.olemiss.edu PS: I bet the FreeBSD team's getting tired of me screwing up and then running to them for help :) -- viren shah $ " " viren@cy.cs.olemiss.edu $ -- viren shah 23rd july 1993
