After some experimentation, it turns out that 386bsd has problems with my
hard disk only after cylinder 784 (assuming the first one is #1).  My hard
disk has the following characteristics:

Western Digital 40MB IDE, model# WD95044-A
977 cylinders
5 heads
17 sectors/track

Thanks to Eric Haug for the advice to narrow down this problem.
