Sorry, I had some time this week-end to look about it again. my conclusion
is :
XFree-2.0 + FreeBSD-1.0 + twm = (no problem)
XFree-2.0 + FreeBSD-1.0 + fvwm-0.98 = (no problem)
XFree-2.0 + FreeBSD-1.0 + fvwm-0.99 = bug.
